The body; is sensitive.
Who knows how long since the last embrace?
Hans Josephson’s Untitled 1962-1964 has a physicality in figurative subject matter as well as with the plasticity of material form, finger marks are visible, and the human touch clearly worked the composition.
A central part of the project will attempt to reconcile the corporal, somatic self with the cerebrum. The combination of bathing, spa treatment, and massage acts as a catalyst for social interaction; physical contact between other peoples (therapists) helps to bridge the gap between solitude and exclusion.Studies have long proven that the treatment of our largest organ has many medical benefits, rewarding the physical and cognitive. Skin-on-skin contact between babies and parents has a direct correlation to the health of the immune system and cognitive development. Current research corroborates the effects that a lack of physical interaction can have; early deprivation leads to an imbalance of oxytocin and vasopressin (hormones that have been linked to emotion and social bonding) in contrast to the levels of those who received touch and engagement. Research into the heightened levels of the stress hormone cortisol; our natural ‘fight or flight’ hormone is seen as a link between aggressive behavior and substance abuse in adults who experienced childhood neglect.
Understanding the multitude of levels of comfort plays a critical role in the process of rehabilitation. Incorporated into the structure of the rehabilitation program, the act of cleansing and spa therapy will help the patient develop an understanding of body awareness and stimulation that can help with growing levels of self-esteem and confidence during rehabilitation. All levels of comfort and privacy will be greeted with respect for the patient in developing their own treatment program.
